The Cup of Ancient Wonder

This is a poem written for my novel, about one of the main celebrations at the advent of spring.

It tells the story of the history of the wood nymphs and water sprites and their connection to the land through the Goddess of new life Dorinian.

It may become a song, and part of the soundtrack for the book.

The Cup of Ancient Wonder.

And sing to me oh childhood dreams

Of  lands beyond the thunder

And toast the tales of times gone by

With  the Cup of ancient wonder

Upon a time the land of Fae,

Resplendent in its faery folk

And built above the magic’s flow,

For humans proved a heavy yolk

So one great King through grand decree

Proclaimed the faeries should be gone

And so upon a summers morn

His soldiers rode to move them on

With sword and shield and battle steed

They thundered to the killing ground

But fleet of foot, Fae’s children fled

With not a faery to be found

And so the King claimed victory sweet

And minstrels sang of his great stand

But Elf and Spriggan, Nymph and Sprite

Held counsel to reclaim the land

And sing to me oh childhood dreams

Of lands beyond the thunder

And toast the tales of times gone by

With  the Cup of ancient wonder

So in woods and valleys hid from view

The faery folk they planned their fight

But men were many and Faery few

And  once again they took to flight

The Elves and Spriggans travelled far

Till to the Elderland they came

And settled there in magic’s heart

Where to this day they still remain

The Nymphs took refuge in the woods,

For without them there the land would fail

And Waters refuge saved the Sprites,

From lakes and rivers now they hale

To come together once a year

And join the seasons mating rite

That Spring might bring the harvest full

And again secure a future bright.

And sing to me oh childhood dreams

Of  lands beyond the thunder

And toast the tales of times gone by

With the Cup of ancient wonder

So join together Nymphs and Sprites

And dance around Dorinians tree

For spring is here and once again

The land is in great need of thee

So do your dance and sing your songs

For fertile land and waters flow

Implore Dorinian bless the land

So that our crops will surely grow

And when the harvest comes around,

Abundant is our bounty’s store

To help us see the winter through

And bring us safe to spring once more

So Nymphs and sprites come celebrate

Come dance and sing and drink and play

And Join with us in worships rite

To celebrate Dorinians day.

And sing to me oh childhood dreams

Of lands beyond the thunder

And toast the tales of times gone by

With the Cup… of ancient… wonder

  1. I think I may (at times) be stuck in some of these dreamscapes… Prost!
