Murdoch’s Poll machines stuck on the spin cycle.

Murdoch’s Poll machines stuck on the spin cycle.

I seem to spend a lot of time, these days, yelling obscenities  at the TV as the programs

Rupert Murdoch - World Economic Forum Annual M...

Mendacious Murdoch (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

that are supposed to report or discuss the news, are in reality, more about making it up or becoming a part of it!

Of course I’m referring to the latest round of speculation about the much longed for (by the LNP, which in itself speaks volumes) and MSM touted, on again, off again Leadership spill.

Now call me cynical   😯   but when I heard the first new reference c6868d4bc5d167f9b065153b980bdaf0.250.250to this latest round, it was from that drooling, dribbling, whining, whinging, whimpering mouth of Chrissy (The Mincing Poodle) Pyne, saying how his “sources within the ALP!” at which point I had an involuntary  WTF  moment.

Now I personally have trouble imagining anyone, even in his own party, that would want to associate with him if they didn’t have to, but in the ALP, anything short of an LNP plant it’s all but unthinkable.

And far be it from me to call him a LIAR   😆   but seriously who, in their right mind, would be sitting in caucus, or on the back bench thinking   💡    ‘I know…  If I tell my mate Chrissy this, I can be instrumental in losing the election, destroying the ALP, losing my own seat and setting the country back 20 + years’

Which brings me to the reason for all this speculation… The Polls.

As they are more regular than mendacious Murdoch’s bowel movements, and for the most part, of similar consistency, it’s hardly surprising that they are used ad-infinitum by his own LTD News Papers (which are also full of it   😯   )

So how are the polls conducted?

The most common formula used, is for the pollsters to contact people via a landline.  There are a couple of obvious problems with this method;

  1. Most people under 40 no longer have landlines, they use mobiles, meaning that a large percentage of the voting public will never get polled.
  2. Landlines are easy to manipulate, as I demonstrated in a previous post; a five minute search on the internet will provide all the landline prefixes for any electorate, which can then be used to provide skewed numbers.

Next we have the questions asked.

The last couple of polls that I took a close look at had questions like;

If an election were held today which party would get your first preference, and if you are not sure, which party are you leaning towards?  followed by If you don’t know, which party are you leaning towards?

Now I initially thought WTF?  Followed by, why don’t they just have a separate  “Not sure”  and  “Don’t know” , or just“undecided” answer option?

Then I thought back over most of the polls that I have seen, recently at least, and realised that none that I can recall show the number of undecided and many list the percentage to 100% while not listing any percentage of undecided, so my question is how can these polls be taken seriously?

And the short answer is;   THEY SHOULDN’T BE!

Now having come to that conclusion, the only other point that needs to be made about

Roy Morgan Research logo

Roy Morgan Research logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

these polls is, as in this weeks polls, there is a Morgan poll that shows a lift in the ALP’s numbers and a major discrepancy between  the Murdoch/Fairfax polls, but the much larger and more comprehensive Morgan poll which includes, internet and face to face content, and which is the most recent poll, is ignored.     The real frustration for me and, I’m sure, many others, is that  the other more questionable polls are quoted as “The most recent” and regurgitated and fawned over as the be all and end all, definitive expression, of voting intensions… again   WTF?

One other point about the numbers is that if the don’t knows and undecideds are included in the 100% total, and the majority of respondents say that they are voting other than ALP, then it would also be fair to assume that the vast majority of respondents who prefer Rudd, don’t actually intend to vote ALP.

On top of that, even if 50% of the total 32%  of ALP respondents prefer Rudd (That’s just 16% of total respondents), that makes a much larger percentage  of LNP respondents and “others” that want Rudd, and My question is … “Why is that?”

Could it be that the people that want Rudd the most, are not ALP supporters but rather those with an ulterior motive?

So why is it that we are bombarded with polls almost every day, that are then dissected and interpreted by our mendacious MSM, owned or controlled by Murdoch and his mendacious mogul mates, and the independent polls are ignored when they contradict the results of News Poll or one of the other media owned polling companies?

And the only answer that I can come up with is that, like a broken washing machine that won’t actually wash the clothes, just fills up the tub, wets them and then spins them out while they’re still dirty;

‘Murdoch’s poll machines are also stuck on the “spin” cycle!’    🙄

I have often wondered about Polls. I remember the Vic election when Kenneth was tipped to win with a landslide and Labor won. Everyone was stunned by this result, including yours truly. Stunned but happy.

Caz2, thanks for your comment 😀 and yes it’s not necessarily an exact science, 😯 and that’s why I’ve been yelling obscenities at the TV, 😦 cos they aren’t that accurate, and yet if you listen to the MSM we’re just wasting time waiting for Sept 14, as it’s a foregone conclusion. 🙄

So this post is really about helping me to stop yelling at the TV 😀 but on reflection, I don’t think it’ll work 😯 😀

  2. Polls have always been very iffy. Learned in doing Psychology 1st year, that polls can be anything the person who is organizing wants them to be. Guess who wants the LNP to win the election, Murdoch of course. Who owns 2 polls? Murdoch of course. Who owns the other one they like to show us? Fairfax/Reinhart of course. It would seem that Morgan have done a lot more research & seem to cover a wider selection of people to poll. We’ll just have to wait & see won’t we.
    Once again, Truthie, great article.

I appreciate your feedback, as this started as a bit of a rant, 😯 and it’s really hard to be objective about something that stirs such emotions 😀

And I’m sure that I’m not alone in my frustrations at all the focus on polls, when they should mean bugger all, this far out from an election, even if they were accurate 😆

      Thanks again Sandra 😀

Very well said! If we ever want an educated voting population the first thing we need is Murdoch under the wheels of a bus, I would say Gina too but I don’t think she’d fit…Nor Clive palmer. Naturally people side with what they hear first; we need non biased reporting – facts only, and reserve the opinion for the viewer. God forbid they take away the non-commercial stations like the LNP want to do. The LNP is more and more resembling the US republican party, which is a world renowned joke.

I have a mate that’s a bus driver on the coast who could probably take aim at palmer 😀 (Just kidding about him taking aim) but I think it would be a bit more difficult with Murdoch 😦

But you are dead right about our media, and I have been saying for a long time that we need a Canadian style “Truth In Media” Legislation, to deal with the spin and lies of the MSM in this country. 😯

And that is why we have to focus on the main game, which is about sending the LNP and their tea party politics back to the gutter where they belong, and in the process make the LTD News corp and their MSM buddies irrelevant.

Abbott will turn this country into an international laughing stock, and cannot be allowed to get his grubby mitts on the keys to the Lodge, or treasury. 👿 So we all have to keep up the fight, until they are well and truly beaten 😀

        Cheers 😀

Hi Truthie, I’m so glad you’ve picked up on this. You’ve done some thinking that I haven’t been able to get around to – in particular what happens to the ‘undecided’.
I believe this matter of the polls will turn out to more important than any of us would like it to be in this election, because these polls are not necessarily about ‘testing’ the waters, but about ‘inking’ the waters, and feeding whatever that may seem to indicate back to the public as a fait accompi. Let’s not underestimate the sheepish nature of human beings. We all enjoy to be on the winning side. Rupert knows this, but some Labor politicians don’t ‘get’ it. So, thanks again for keeping on with this.

I still watch Cassidy’s insider in the hope he will repent and give us some truth. He has monthly spot on the program “poll of polls” which amalgamates them all. The most useful part is the bloke that does it truthfully admits that they are at best a snapshot, at worst some concocted history. George Megalogensis a while ago told Cassidy on air he will not discuss polls because they were meaningless. I used to read the Australian because people like Mega wrote there, but no more I wonder why? Interestingly twice recently on Insiders I have seen Lenore Taylor and Malcolm Farr(!) have a go at Piers A********. So it seems even Farr has some conscience even if he works for LTD news.

    Hi Truthy
I have been saying for some time that the polls are manipulated, when a good week for Julia still gives a crap poll result, and a bad week for abbort see’s no change.

Today I cancelled my Foxtel subscription and told them I could no longer support an organization whose principle benefactor is trying to overthrow the elected government.

To his credit he said it is political I said yes so my feeling is it is not the first time he and his people have heard this. I felt a little better after that call.

I posted the following elsewhere I include it again
“Just after Kevin kicked the rodent out I made a comment on Possum that labor would face a hostile media Bushfire Bill responded “You better believe it” unquote.
Well here we are 6 years down the track and to their shame the abc (not worth capitals) slithered into the enemy camp joining Fairfax leaving only the fifth estate to show an unbiased perspective not all but most.
The polls imho are being manipulated and as others have intimated, if they the Noalition were such a shoe in, why has the rhetoric reached historical high levels.
The aim is to scare the Labor into some action, neither the media nor the noalition will bring Julia down, the only danger is the labor nervous nellies in caucus who think they have a better chance with Kevin.
NO WAY. the media and the Noalition will go ape shit, a government that can’t lead itself can not lead the country/ disunity is death etc etc.
The Lemon ad will do a Lazarus saving them heaps of money and effort.

Such a change would see noalition policies not even get a mention too many side attraction to pursue.
We have heard all sides spout this over the years and watched it play out.
I pray each week that the Australian General Public wake up, even Bob Ellis is starting to make sense and that should scare us all.
The only way forward for Australia, “is all the way with WWJ” (Wonder Woman Julia).
the MSM will NOT change its spots.
Julia and co need to hammer “It’s the Economy stupid” day in day out plus its own Bisons from Finnigans site
    STOP the LIES.
VOTE for Julia and democracy NOT Murdoch and mediocrity. AMEN.”
Keep up the good work folks

I have been saying much the same for a long time now and I think that you summed it up very well. 😎

Good on you for taking a stand against Murdoch’s Foxtel, and I hope that any others that love this great country, and fear for its future under Murdoch’s puppet, Abbott, will follow your lead , and tell them to shove it! 😀

The hysterical nature of the rhetoric, of late, says that they are not as comfortable as many would assume that they are 😀 and if you saw Abbotts face as he walked into the ball last night, he had a face like a thunderhead, while Margie was quite a contrast, wearing a big smile. Mmmmmmm?

Maybe she is looking forward to his monumental failure at the election, after which, if the rumours are true, she will get the divorce that she has been after for years? 😯

Challenged by one of my regulars, Jock, I have written a poem along the lines of your last few lines, and am in the process of putting it to music, so if all goes well I am hoping to record it and put it up for comments and opinions within the next week or so. 😀

Lol nicely said, Truthy – the Murdoch and Fairfax polls ARE permanently “stuck on the spin cycle” indeed. The really, really dirty and nasty one 😡

We’re in desperate need of a mainstream news service that’s not afraid to use the Morgan Poll which is after all the MOST accurate poll there is and so you’d think that it should be the poll of choice for any news outlet worth their salt. As opposed to those ones that just like to suck up to the media dictators for some pathetic reason.

Oh australian journalist’s code of ethics – where have you gone? How we miss thou!! 😥

But as I said to Kate at Fair Media Alliance, Truthy, as she also wrote a nice piece about these mendacious polls, at least we can take heart that the Morgan Poll did find that the ALP is CLOSING THE GAP! Wow that’s amazing. This is what the Labor party should focus on, that it IS possible to turn the tide. We mustn’t lose faith that we can, because that’s what helps keep us going and not give up, and our efforts can you never know, move bloody mountains mate. Move bloody mountains! Or at least kick some serious Phony Abbott butt 🙂

Hi, TS. Loved the post. You are so right wrt most of the polls. I really don’t know how anyone could possibly believe that Rupert & Rinehart wouldn’t be behind manipulating poll figures, either by manipulating the questions or the data.

Your link to the Guardian article is a beauty. What puzzled me are the number of Liars voters who in essence are in favour of Labor’s policies & don’t want TAPM, but will vote Liars.

FFs, vote Greens, or Independent or just go ahead & vote for the ALP & send a clear message to the Liars that they don’t like their stated intentions wrt the carbon price, NBN, welfare for the wealthy, & demonising asylum seekers!

One commenter remarked that the government is its own worst enemy and whinged that they are hopeless at getting their message out. I call bullshit on that! The government’s worst enemies are Rupert & Gina. Between them they not only make certain the government’s message can’t get out, but shamelessly lie, smear, obfuscate & spread FUD about the government the PM & the economy.

I am liking the Guardian more & more. It stands head & shoulders above what passes for informed reporting in Rupert’s & Gina’s rags.

I caught the tail end of 7.5, tonight where Leigh Sales was babbling on about the leadershit bullshit & all but saying JGPM had been forced to resign. My heart sank to my boots, but then she started to interview Emmo & I realised it was all just msm bullshit.

BP restored & desire to take out a contract on Liealot & Rupert subsided.

Another reason I want the government to be restored is to give the finger to Liealot & Rupert.

I’d say they’ll dump Liealot if they don’t win, but why bother; all they’ve got are clones of him. But it will be fun to watch the blood bath. I might just buy some popcorn & a bottle of Dom.

    Hi there Truthy

Just thought i would drop you a quick line, isn’t amazing now that the polls have changed and Tony Abbott is just about in the same position that Julia Gillard was in about a month ago that the MSM/ABC haven’t been banging on (almost on a daily and hourly basis) about how bad the polling is for the Coalition and Tony Abbotts own polling numbers. Where are the editorials demanding that he step aside, where are the commentators that are picking up on every little thing except what actually matters. How come there isn’t this constant referral to what ever Malcolm Turnbill is doing and what his polling numbers are, where is the constant speculation about a leadership challenge?

It will be interesting to see what will happen if the current trend in polls continues or it gets worse for the Coalition, will it force them to actually start talking about policies, will they continue to stick with Tony Abbott or start to look at Mr Turnbill?

Anyway Truthy you have an awesome day.

Wazman, good to hear from you 😀 and thanks for your comment 😎

Yes it is just another example of their gross hypocrisy, that they haven’t started the same discourse about Abbott and his bad poll numbers, leadership tensions within the LNP, etc etc. 😯

What is just as relevant is that they have all but ignored the Morgan polls for months now, which are a multi format poll of a much larger sample than any of the others, and which have consistently told a different story, and currently have the ALP well in front on a TPP, and even on first preferences 😯

I think it’s just that they have invested so much time in Abbott and their claims of dysfunction over leadership issues, that they can’t really do anything about Abbott until after the election, without looking like the lying bunch of bottom feeders that they really are 😀

Thanks for your input mate, 😀 and it’s always good to hear from you 😎

You have a great day too 😀

      Cheers 😀
