PNG… What will be the consequences for Abbott and Milne?

PNG… What will be the consequences for Abbott and Milne?

My last post asked the question “So Tony, where do you go from here?”

abbott1Well the answer may well be that Rudd’s PNG solution leaves both Abbott and Milne with nowhere left to go, as the early reports from Indonesian people smugglers and their victims indicate that it is already having an impact on those considering the “Boat” option.

Now if it works, as the early indications are that it will, then not only will it leave them with nowhere to go, but it also will show that the responsibility for what has happened since Abbott and Milne voted down the Malaysian solution, rests fairly and squarely on their shoulders.

How, you may ask, can I make that determination?

Well, most of the criticism for the Malaysian solution, from the LNP, came from the fact that there were only going to be 800 places in the swap arrangements.

And the argument was that those places would be filled in a matter of weeks.

Now I argued at the time that if the Malaysian solution was implemented, I had serious doubts that there would be more than a relative handful that would be prepared to risk the trip, only to be returned from whence they came,  before the realisation set in that it was a complete waste of time and money to trust the people smugglers.

And contrary to the LNP spin, logic would dictate that the people smugglers would be pushing the ‘proverbial’ up hill to find 800 asylum seekers prepared to sacrifice their money, their futures and possibly their lives for the sake of securing the people smugglers own business model.

So my contention at the time was that I doubted that more than one or two boats would make the trip, before they ran out of clients, meaning that at most 300 to 400 asylum seekers would end up back in Malaysia, out of the 800 places allocated.

So let’s leave the spin for the LNP, and add some basic logic to the situation, and see what the possible scenarios are.

  1. Those genuine refugees that are happy to settle anywhere that’s safe, may well take the chance of a boat, but it would make more sense to apply directly to PNG, rather than risk life and limb.
  2. There may be some that will not have heard of the new rules, and as a consequence get on a boat, and end up on Manus Island, or dead.
  3. The people smugglers may fool some into believing that the Aus government is bluffing, but that won’t last long, as the word will soon get around that they’re not.
  4. That the boats stop altogether in a very short period of time, proving the LNP and the sceptics completely wrong

Now IMHO these are the most likely scenarios, but there is also the possibility that the boats will keep coming unabated, as the LNP hope, but I seriously doubt that that would happen, as it relies on the asylum seekers putting their lives in jeopardy, and spending a large sum of money on a trip to end up somewhere close to their departure point, and somewhere other than their preferred destination, if they are lucky enough to arrive at all.

There is also the possibility of a court challenge from the do-gooder advocate lawyers, who caused the problem for the Malaysian solution in the first place.

I do think though that the government, being burnt the first time, would have done their homework, and I would be very surprised if they haven’t made sure that the problems identified by the first decision have been well and truly addressed in this arrangement.

So, if one or a combination of my most likely scenarios come to fruition, then there will almost undoubtedly be some political consequences for the LNP and the greens.

For the LNP;

  1. Their lies and spin on this and other issues will be brought into question.
  2. Whatever credibility they may have had on their asylum seeker policy will be gone.
  3. They will be seen as the party who see the lives of asylum seekers as politically expedient, for the greater good… THEIRS!
  4. People will know that the reason that they refused point blank to compromise on the Malaysian solution, was not because they were concerned for the welfare of asylum seekers in Indonesia, who they declared were not signatories to the refugee convention, but rather that they knew that there was a good chance that it would actually work, blowing holes in their already shaky policy platform.images

The greens, on the other hand, cried foul, pretty much as they are now, stating that it was unfair, inhumane treatment, etc etc, completely ignoring the fact that the de-facto on-shore policy that we had (and that they wanted) was not working, and the number of boats and drownings continued to grow.

imagesSo they, whist claiming such care and concern for these desperate souls, also took the line of political expediency, albeit for ideological reasons, and voted with the LNP against changing the laws to allow the Malaysian solution to at least get tried.

Both these party’s also rejected the recommendations of the Houston panel, of experts, because they determined that they “Knew Better?”   WTF?

They both spewed forth copious amounts of spin, again ignoring the fact that the brief of the panel was not to be inhumane, or to get either the LNP or the greens off side, but rather to find a set of compromises that might just stop people drowning at sea.

But in their usual fashion, both the rabid right and the rabid left  “chose” to lose sight of the destination, for the sake of following their own political agendas, and we have all witnessed the results of that intransigence.

So for the greens, the political fall out may well result in a feeling in the wider community;

  1. That they were prepared to risk deaths at sea for the sake of political intransigence.
  2. That they cried crocodile tears over lives lost whilst waving their ideology like some flag of righteousness, and blaming the government for what will be seen, by many, as their own level of culpability.
  3. That they do not deserve the level of support that they may otherwise have received, if they had been willing to compromise for the sake of helping to solve the problem rather than just being another part of the problem.

Only time will tell how this all plays out, and I am not claiming to have some great insight into the future, only trying to look at a very complex and difficult situation with a measure of logic and common sense.

The one thing that I am sure of though, is that if the PNG solution starts to reduce the number of boats and, given a fair go, I’m reasonably confident that it will, then it will be a fair indicator that the Malaysian solution would have also worked, meaning that many lives would have been saved if the LNP and the greens had not been playing their petty, political games.

Therefore, there will be electoral consequences for both the LNP and the greens, as it will be increasingly difficult for either of them to justify their previous positions, although I’d imagine they will continue to try.

So the question is;

“PNG… What will be the consequences for Abbott and Milne?”

    Hi Truthie,
I’m trying again to post a comment. The comment situation definitely looks different, and I did fill in all the requirements, but this time I’ve clicked the wordpress icon, so here we go again.

I think this is one of your best. This is very tricky ground, and you’ve covered it with commonsense, and as you say, logic. And, I believe, aplomb.

I’ve noticed over the weekend that there are lots of strident voices screaming ‘cruelty’ and other such stuff. Just listening to AM as I’m writing this, and wanting to throw my radio out the window.

Tony Abbott who, at first, supported the PNG move, has now back-tracked. He’s a dill, as we know, but he’ll inflict as much damage as he can.

Hi Kate, thanks for your perseverance, 😀 and your comment 😎

I also thank you for your gracious assessment of this piece 😀

It is a difficult area to handle, and there will always be detractors, but I believe that if all the spin, lies and scare mongering is removed, we might be able to have the necessary conversation, and a fair and reasonable outcome for all concerned. 😯

But first of all we need the LNP and the greens to stop playing their political games, and to stop people drowning at sea! 😦

      Cheers 😀

100% correct, TS. & you have hit the nail, far & square, on the head. Neither party give a toss for the awful problems of “deaths at sea” or the grasping people smugglers or, even worse, the plight of the desperate asylum seekers using such means to reach Australia. Both knew that the Malaysian Solution could work & the flow of asylum seeking refugees would drastically reduce but decided to play cutesy & continue to pretend that there would be no reductions in the flow at all.

Same here with the agreement with PNG. One thing they cannot use as an excuse for their egregious behaviour is that PNG is not a signatory to the UN refugee charter because they are. So, now, for their own political expediency they are traducing a whole country by calling it a “hellhole” “third world cesspit” “lawless” “malaria & cholera hotspot” (Indonesia isn’t??) etc ad nauseum. They paint pictures of huge waves of asylum seekers descending on a “primitive” monocultural Christian land thereby creating all sorts of chaos.

The detention hellholes created here in Australia by Howard, Vanstone & Ruddock did nothing to stop the poor asylum seekers being dumped on Ashmore Reef, with its contaminated & cholera infected water wells, by the uncaring people smugglers. It is duplicitous to say that it stopped the boats. What stopped the boats was a change in world circumstances which have since changed once more creating another tsunami of asylum seekers.

I really believe that this situation is much too serious to be just a political plaything for the mendacious Abbott and Milne/SHY.

      They have added nothing to the conversation other than their own brands of political dummy spits, cos they didn’t get their own way;
In the case of the LNP the reigns of government, and in the case of the greens, their own short sighted and impractical policy that says just throw open the flood gates and see what happens! 😯

Sadly the number of fatalities keeps growing and the dummy spits, lies and spin keep coming.

what you say joy is spot on, and the LNP and the greens either need to get real, or they need to get out of the way. 😯

Thanks TS for another considered piece. The support you get from other writers is comforting!

Does anyone know what the status of any successful asylum seekers, resettled in PNG would be. I presume they would be granted some form of permanent residency. Would they then not be able to apply for immigration to Australia under our normal ( and hopefully increased ) Immigration Scheme? If not I think there would have to a specific reference to such a restriction in any documents signed with PNG. I’m not sure how that would stack up under law!

It will be interesting see what actually happens “on the ground ” as this policy beds in. Wouldn’t it be good if the media could let that happen, then report, rather than what they will do which will be dissect every possible negative possibility!

Hi mark 😀 and thanks for your feedback 😎

I’m not sure that any have actually been resettled in PNG as yet, but it will be interesting to watch as these things unfold 😀

There has been so much hysteria since the announcement of this arrangement, and Milne is certainly living up to my expectations 😯

This morning on the ABC, she spouted her usual crap, and then the first question that she was asked was about the number of asylum seekers who have already said that they will no longer try coming to Aus by boat, and her reply was “It wont work” WTF? she is looking and sounding very much like the black knight in monty pythons “Search for the holy grail” When after having his arms cut off he states “It’s only a flesh wound!” 😦

I said to my wife this morning that I doubt that there will be more than a few hundred that end up in PNG, and the three thousand place upgrade to accommodation will not be needed or realised.

It will be interesting to see how my prediction stands up, if the PNG solution gets a fair go.

      Cheers ;grin:

Fed up , I know that they have already started, but I think that the momentum is with the government on this one, and Abbott is starting to panic, as they LNP start breaking ranks, as Turnbull did when he said that he thinks it will work.

And if you listen to Abbott and his cheer squad they are now saying that it won’t work because Rudd won’t be able to implement it. 😯

It is clear that they are worried because if, as the early indications show, the PNG sloution is working, then he is left high and dry. 😀

  6. Thank you for a clear statement on the politics of this vexewd matter. Those who want a solution are refusing to see the “big picture” of Millions of displaced people world-wide. All we can do is try to fix a problem we have here in our corner of the world. By rejecting all “Boat People” but accepting more pre-processed refugees we solve the drownings at sea problem and significantly reduce the number of refugees in Indonesia. The number going to PNG will never be large as they would need to choose to pay money to get on a boat which may sink or may lead them on a path to PNG. So PNG will never see the floods of refugees we have seen here in Australia.

The initial news reports from the coal face (as opposed to opinionistas and the politically involved) is that the refugees themselves will stop booking standing space on leaky boats and the People Smugglers see their business model going down the gurgler.

I do have the obvious reservation that this is a political solution but then, I do have to accepot that ALL decisions made in Canberra are political decisions.

Yes the MSM and the LNP and greens are getting more and more hysterical, whist ignoring the facts. 😯

Anyone looking at this vexed issue with a modicum of clear thinking would come to the conclusion that political expedience has taken over from what will actually work.

Both the LNP and the greens, along with the do-gooder brigade should hang their heads in shame, as they clamour for dibs on the lowest place in the gutter, whilst claiming such care and concern for their fellow man 😦

    TruthSeeker,
The on problem with the Malaysian solution was that the 800 was not high enough. It really needed a figure of 3000. What the people smugglers could have done is to keep sending the boats but not charging the refugees therefore breaking the solution.
This PNG plan is far better. The whole idea of it is to automatically weed out the non genuine refugees. It’s clever.
I see the Libs are busy trying to undermine the plan. Indeed they may as well join the people smugglers. I hope people see through the Libs as it almost amounts to treason.
I think the Greens are chasing extra votes from the refugee community. Another self serving political party and I am very disappointed in them.
I was a believer in them once and they have some good ideas but they are way off on this issue.

I don’t actually subscribe to the idea that 800 was not enough, as I truly believe that the people smugglers would have had real trouble filling boats after the first couple, but we will soon know if the PNG solution gets a fair go, because if they only get a few hundred, then that will be the answer, and I suspect that that will be the case 😯

I think there are many like you that are disappointed in the greens, and for very good reason. 😦

Let us hope genuine refugees will now join the queue and wait their turn. After all, it is irresponsible to risk your children’s lives .Abbott’s continual bleating about stopping the boats, without a word on how he will do this is becoming annoying. Of course the best he can do Is knock the only PLAN that has the capacity to work. Bleeding hearts are fine, but solutions are better. This is a deterrent for smugglers as well as the boat people. It will also stop the destruction of visas. Now all we need to do is stop the arrivals by plane. Any suggestions?

Hi TS, in regard to the fly in “refugees” the Govt should hold their passports, and simply by reviewing the date of arrival, the Govt would know who had overstayed their visa. Of course it would need more staff checking work sites to track overstayers, but the UK and US do this. And we all know the of the type of job each nationality seeks. Take the Indian taxi drivers who have no idea where the passengers want to go. I am also concerned with deaths at sea, but I want to see Australians in jobs before illegal l workers , who are over represented in some occupations. Australia’s first. It’s a very sad day that it has come to this. But I don’t think there is an alternate plan that would work. If we can take more asylum seekers from the camps and encourage other nations to do likewise then people may wait in line. You are right to say that it is sad, but our hand has been forced by the people smugglers, the LNP and the greens.

Their political intransigence has made it impossible to have a civilised and informed debate, and so we have the PNG solution which is not perfect, but until the LNP and the greens stop playing their political games, it is the best option for stopping the drownings.

Hi Truth Seeker, Thanks for the very interesting Article. I’ts such a hard complex issue with all these people coming , and tonight on Late line the Labor MP was saying that 50 thousand people was destined to be coming here if K Rudd hadn’t done what he did . I was talking to my husband this evening during Q&A because it was mostly to do with the Asylum seekers , and we came to the same decision about the newest arrivals from Iran ,

They have been told that their destination is going to be PNG and now they are wondering is it best to go back home rather than going to PNG, if they do return them back to where they fled from , The question still is “Are they true Asylum Seekers? which i think they are not.

Did you watch Late line tonight? Bill shorten is still trying to come to terms for what he did to Julia with the way he has gone, very subdued of late. but Tony Jones was as arrogant as ever
cutting across Shorten but shorten fought back.
Fisher was very good , I didn’t know he was autistic did you? he was in agreement the Decision Rudd had made but the solution has to come from the place they departed from .

I also heard that the labor has taken a hit in the polls tonight , Liberals up two point . and labor down two point . I forget the figure. Theses polls should be stopped they are a hindrance as one of the guest on Q&A said herself . The media and the two parties the greens and Liberals also has to stop being negative, There will be lots of negative talk from Abbott as usual and unless Kevin Rudd goes to an election soon i think the polls will keep going down for him.
That is the gut feeling iIm getting. how on earth can the people of Australia vote for such party.

Hefina, thanks for your comment 😎 and your kind words 😀
Yes it is a very complex issue, with no easy solutions. 😦

My parents and I came out in 1969, and made Australia our home. 😀 So I do understand why people would want to come to the best country in the world, even though we do have our own problems, they are nothing to those of the genuine refugees. 😥

I do think that many have a problem with those that are paying large sums of money to the people smugglers, and then call themselves “refugees”, when we see the shots of people with nothing living iv squalor in refugee camps in Syria and the like. 😦

I did watch QandA last night, and got pretty annoyed with Tony Jones at times, but that’s normal 😯

I wouldn’t worry too much about News poll, as it is Murdoch’s, and not that reliable, the Morgan poll which is a multi format poll and a much larger sample shows Labor still winning on a TTP basis, and even slightly ahead on 1st preference.

Yes someone must have reported me to, as I am being moderated again at the Guardian, but there are always going to be idiots like Marilyn. 😯 She did come here once, but I Told her that I wouldn’t tolerate her trolling, and she hasn’t come back since 😀

Hope you have a great time with your brother. 😀

Don’t worry about the typos, cos we are all friends here, and all make them 😀

I’m an economic migrant, 10 pound tourist from the UK in 1970 with wife and baby. I have great sympathy with the economic escapees from much harsher circumstances than mine ( also my resettlement part of the white Australia policy) and understand their motives entirely. But are they more deserving than the refugees in atrocious camps who have no money to pay the sumugglers. It all comes back to numbers. Our infrastructure and services can’t cope with large numbers, so choices have to be made. But pity the people and countries with no hope and no choice. Look at Jordan and Turkey being swamped with hundreds of thousands. ( By bias is creeping in; here consider the lack of help by the Isrealis across the Syra/West bank border.) AND ALL ABBOTT AND THE GREENS CAN DO IS SCORE POLITICAL POINTS – ARSEHOLES THE LOT OF THEM.

Morning Jock 😀 As I was saying to Hefina, we arrived in 1969, and also understand why people would want to come here, but as you say we can’t take everyone, and choices have to be made.

As Shorten pointed out on QandA last night, we are not an un-generous nation, but there are something like 43 million displaced people around the world, and we can’t take them all. 😯

Every country has to weigh up what is in their own best interests whilst still trying to do the right thing, and the greens and the LNP just muddy the waters with their petty political games. 🙄

Listen to some minors being questioned this morning in Indonesia. They said they have no choice, but to get on the boat. Said that the smugglers said they have to wait, as the seas are too rough. These young teenagers fathers are all dead. Family used all they had, to allow them to flee to safety. They do not know anyone in Australia to responser them.

The said they cannot stay where they are, as they have no more money, and all they want to do, is be able to work. Yes, they said, PNG will be OK.

It is a shame we cannot pick up the likes of these people, young as fifteen, and bring them herre, without having to get on that boat. I suspect they will be of great value to PNG.

There is Mosque in PNG, and I am sure they will be looked after.

Well, this article has been just great to read, as are the comments.

I admit that I was feeling so awful about the ousting of J Gillard, that anything K Rudd put up I assessed as being purely politically driven, and it influenced my interpretation of the PNG solution.
Well, this is a political response. It has to be, because this is a political problem.

Originally I thought that the politics was the prominent feature, but I’m going to allow myself to realise that it has a humane component. In fact to my untrained eye I believe that for asylum seekers, asylum seekers who get onto leaky boats, and for PNG this could be a good solution.

Politically it accomplishes the revelation of T Abbott as a callous and selfish possible PM – again, but to a greater degree. And C Milne and S Hansen Young have shown their ability to overlook a grievous dilemma for the sake of achieving their own political ends.

I have to tell you that many here, me included, felt pretty much the same, as we were great supporters of our first female PM 😦

But we came to the conclusion that we need to support her legacy, which was her wish, against the real enemy of our democracy, Abbott and his LNP.

I still believe that Julia would have won the election, when it came to the votes, but we have to deal with things as they are, and although I am still not happy with Rudd, I know that the future of our country depends on making sure that Abbott isn’t in control of it. 😯

The reality is that Abbott and Milne have done everything they can to encourage the people smugglers to keep sending the boats, cos it’s in their best interests for them to keep coming, and for people to keep drowning. 👿

His press conference with Bishop this afternoon confirmed that, as they continued to tell lies about the agreement with PNG, sending the message to the people smugglers that it won’t work, and that it is “already unraveling” , wishful thinking if ever I heard wishful thinking. 😯

Your assessment of the situation is correct, and I thank you for your feedback. 😀
      and clear thinking 😎

The political intransigence and mendaciousness of the LNP and the greens is now in plain view, and IMHO should as a result, be treated with the utter contempt that they deserve. 😯

They know they can come up with utopian policies, cause they can win and govern.
Cosying up to Abbott, in case he wins. with similar policies seems to be their current train of thought.
At $7 billion, a bloody expensive thought though.
The Greens will go to the election promising to beef up paid parental leave to a six months, wage-replacement scheme capped at an annual salary of $100,000.
Greens leader Christine Milne and senator Sarah Hanson-Young will announce the policy in Canberra on Tuesday morning.

The Australian Financial Review reports the announcement is an endorsement of Tony Abbott’s policy, however, Ms Hanson-Young clarified: “we’re not supporting Tony Abbott’s scheme wholeheartedly but we’d be open to negotiation.”

The Coalition’s proposal has been opposed by Labor, in large part because Labor argues that the opposition’s plan would favour high-earners through its full wage-replacement provision on incomes up to $150,000.

The Parliamentary Budget Office has told the Greens their policy would cost $7.1 billion over four years, with $1.9 billion of that coming from general revenues and $5.2 billion on raised company taxes for firms with taxable income of more than $5 million, the AFR reported

A statement from the Chief of the Defence Force

Contrary to media reporting today, the Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley has not provided advice or recommendations to Opposition Leader, Mr Tony Abbott with respect to Coalition policy on asylum seeker issues.

Defence understands that the Chief of the Defence Force would be consulted regarding any future policies affecting Defence to be implemented by a future government.

The Chief of the Defence Force’s role is to implement the policies of the Government of the Day and the Australian Defence Force continues to contribute to the whole-of-government effort to protect Australia’s borders and offshore maritime interests through Operation RESOLUTE.

Approximately 500 Defence personnel are assigned to support Operation RESOLUTE and up to seven Armidale Class Patrol Boats, one major Fleet Unit, three AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft and a Transit Security Element.

The work is difficult, dangerous and unrelenting.

The men and women who are deployed on Operation RESOLUTE do an outstanding job under intense scrutiny.

They are absolutely shit scared that Wikkileaks will decimate their vote.
The allure of a new party, bloody good candidates and similar policies , and of course, the persona of Julian , is something the Greens can’t handle.
My Greens member friend, admitted that he will be voting for Wikkileaks, and letting his membership lapse.
He is concerned that young people will flood in through net involvement, and the Left, who won’t support Labor, but are disgusted with Milne, will also flock over, as well as special interest groups.
I thought the Green would just about hold their vote.
He reckons it will be at least halved.
    Interesting times 😀

Cornie, mate I’ve been saying for a long time that Milne is taking the greens down the same path as Meg Lees did with the Democrats 😦

      Interesting times indeed 😀

      Cheers 😀
