A National emergency, declared by a National embarrassment, supported by a National disgrace! 
Not content with spreading lies, fear and misinformation, we now have Tony (Action Man) Abbott setting himself up as supreme commander of… Mmmmmm?
With the retired Major (Nut-job) General (Disaster) Jim Molan designing an LNP policy for complete overkill (pardon the pun) of the asylum seeker/ boat issue, we now have “A National Emergency? declared by Tony Abbott (A National Embarrassment), Supported by the LNP (A National Disgrace)”, which would be a National Joke, if it wasn’t so serious. 😯 Which looks to be Nationally unconstitutional anyway.
As is normal now for the LNP, they produced a nice glossy comic book, full of motherhood statements with little real detail and even less costing.
We were told by Jim Molan, that this was “Not” to be a military operation, but it will be led by the military 😯 WTF? But wait… there’s more.
We were also told that it would involve all areas of the military, customs, Federal and State police, ASIO, cousin Fred’s mechanics, and Uncle Toms Cobblers and all 😯 , but we won’t know the individuals departments involvements, until they look into it and report back after the election, if they win.
They will be leasing more boats, to cover every square metre of the Indian Ocean, and will be expanding the detention facilities, which tends to indicate that despite mobilising the seventh fleet, they don’t expect to stop the boats anyway.
Then there was Snot Morrisscum, raining hell fire and damnation upon the government

for using the Navy as a Taxi service, before outlining how their expanded presence will be all about turning boats around (Where it’s safe to do so 🙄 ) and how they would be used to chase them down (in a nautical version of tag, using very expensive boats and crews), and returning people back to their point of departure/origin.
Now to me that sounds a lot like what was called in my day “Doing Laps” of the Indian Ocean until they found a boat, at which time they would then become the taxi. WTF?
Not only have they verballed the Indonesians, they have verballed the PNG PM, who they have refused to apologise to, and they have implicated the defence force in the development of this overkill “policy”, which the defence chief has completely denied.
As well they have proposed a military build up in the Indian Ocean that would have the potential to make many of our neighbours very nervous, on top of the diplomatic slights that these nut-job wannabes have already caused.
On the whole, their presentation contained more lies, spin and misleading statements than an Alan Jones broadcast, and a similar level of credibility, despite their “Experts” testimony. 😯
If you didn’t know better, you could be forgiven for thinking that we were about to go to war against the Spanish armada, instead of a few leaky Indonesian fishing boats filled with frightened men, women and children, hoping for a better life. 😦
So the choices are fairly clear cut:
- We can get behind the PNG solution, and make a concerted effort to stop the boats, and as a consequence stop the drownings.
- We can spend untold billions on a military build up that will effectively turn our Navy into pirates, has the very real potential to create Diplomatic tensions throughout the region, and have a limited, at best, impact on the numbers of boats and drownings. And that’s always supposing that the whole policy doesn’t prove to be unconstitutional.
Or in simple terms we can have a solution that has a real chance of working, or we can have;
A National emergency, declared by a National embarrassment, supported by a National disgrace!

To prove his capability as the Action Man Prime Minister in waiting the “gang of 3 will seize the initiative, cut billions from the Budget “black hole” and save a greatful nation.
Tony will just blow the boats out of the water.
First sign of a “smugglers boat on the horizon and “The Leader”. can open fire.
Standing on the bridge, barking the commands, Tony will sink the lot of them.
No need for Asylum Seeker camps then.
Huge budget saving.
Great training for our navy, smugglers boats are small , so honing targetting skills will improve our defence force skills [probably needed for when we attack PNG, Indonesia and Nauru, and bloody China better watch it too}.
Air force can have a couple of runs at Manus and Nauru as part of the American Alliance joint task force., and blast them off the face of the earth.
They could then have a fly over of PNG, just to let that bloody PM, Peter Oneill know, that he shouldn’t have tried a solution with Rudd.
And by the end off an action man weekend, the boats will be on the bottom off the ocean, the Asylum seeker crisis will no longer exist, we will have a trained up military, and the “holy grail” a budget, back in the black, achieved.
Christmas Island Detention Centre, along with those on the mainland, could then be used to house Gina’s $2 a day workers,flown in on 457 visas as they develop the North
I await further announcements.

Yes it is a gravely serious issue, and you are dead right that the coalition are making a mockery of our country with their puerile and spurious claims and alleged “Policies”.
Sadly there are many who are just so divided, as a result of the conflicting views, lies and spin, that it becomes hard to focus on what really matters.
For those of us that have accepted that there are no easy fixes, to see one side at least trying to do something, while the other side just plays their pathetic political games, produces a cynical response, that by no means is intended to belittle the serious nature of the challenges that confront us, but is designed to show the stupidity of their approach, and hopefully shame them into some level of grown up response.
Sadly with the LNP, that seems to be a lost cause, but to ridicule them for their efforts to derail the only option that might work is, in my mind, a valid and justifiable response. 😯
I am very passionate about this problem, as I greatly value human life, and that’s why I write what I write, hopefully with a bit of humour, lightheartedness, and satire to emphasise the point that something needs to be done. 😀
And I greatly appreciate my readers and commenters like your good self who can focus on the real issues and the truth, and can with clear mindedness add to the debate. 😎

Great stuff, Truthie. It seems, from News Radio this morning, though, that there may be a constitutional problem in PNG where, it seems, the government is not at liberty to detain anyone who hasn’t been convicted of a crime. It also seems that Kevin didn’t bother to let the Indonesians know about the PNG arrangement until yesterday – almost a week after it was announced. They’re not happy.
I hope Kevvie isn’t going to make too many more blunders before the election.

As far as Indonesia is concerned, we are under no obligation to inform them of decisions relating to our arrangements with other nations, in a general sense, and the opposition has done much more to upset them and get them off side anyway.
It is Abbott and the opposition that are undermining the PNG solution, and feeding their lies to the people smugglers who are repeating them to the asylum seekers, to get them on to the boats. 👿

I realize that we are ‘under no obligation’ towards Indonesia in this matter – but it was a mistake – a diplomatic blunder, and a breach of the spirit if not the letter, for K Rudd to keep the Indonesians out of the loop – after all, if the PNG agreement works, the Indonesians will be left holding ‘the baby’. They had every right to be consulted, or at least informed. It would have been the decent thing to do.
I think that one of the most important jobs for us, on this side of politics, is to keep the pressure on our own representatives to give of their very best. Let’s not be one-eyed. Let’s strive for a better world, and if that means that we recognize our own mistakes, so much the better – if we can do this, we will be so much less likely to repeat our mistakes.

Yes, Truthie – sailed and sunk. So let’s not get sunk ourselves. I suppose that I’m coming back to the importance of admitting mistakes. I don’t believe that the disgusting behavior of the LNP and the Greens gives US any kind of mandate to behave in our own doubtful ways..
For instance, we need to have transparency about what’s going on inside the detention centres. If it turns out that the Labor-led minority government has been less than delightful about this, we need to admit it and take it on the chin. And fix it. But most importantly, we need transparency. We need journalists and advocates to be able to go into these centres, and report back to us.
Some of them will be lying, of course – we expect that. But secrecy is the enemy of democracy.

Kate, just to set your mind at ease (well a little 🙂 ) here is a quote from Indonesia’s defence minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro. who has dismissed concerns that Indonesia was not adequately briefed by Australia on the PNG asylum seeker deal.
Speaking at a joint media conference with his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith in Perth, Mr Purnomo said the deal was part of bilateral cooperation between Australia and PNG, and also a “domestic issue”.
Cooperation between Canberra and Jakarta on the issue of asylum seekers remained strong, he said.
“We know that Australia and PNG and also Nauru have the bilateral cooperation to see how you can solve the asylum seekers, but really that is [a part of] bilateral cooperation between you and PNG, and you and Nauru,” he said.
He said Indonesian officials worked closely with Australian officials on the issue of asylum seekers at several levels.
“We have our officials in Canberra in the RCC [Rescue Control Coordination Centre], under the umbrella of AMSA, and also your people in our office. Both of them have very good liaison,” he said.
“Really, we don’t want to involve [ourselves] in the domestic policy issue in your country.”
His comments came after an Indonesian opposition figure said Indonesian MPs had complained that Mr Rudd did not consult with Jakarta before announcing the deal to resettle asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea.
The critical point here was that this issue was raised by a member of Indonesia’s Opposition not by their government.

What it is about conservatives that, despite loudly touting the benefits of small government and regular intonations of “nanny-state”, love the opportunity to get all militaristic for so many issues which are about human welfare? Such as the Northern Territory intervention, not a few thousand hapless boat people, so called peace incursions into Middle Eastern nations (the ones with oil that is), yet little is being done about slave-factories, spread of HIV and many other human made and human impacted misery?

They have little or no concern for asylum seekers, except as a way of gaining government, and appealing to the red neck elements of our society.
Sadly it’s not a new phenomenon , as when I was young I remember the old “Reds under the Beds” campaigns of the conservatives, which was the same type of fear campaign that Abbott is currently running.

It is fun making jokes about these morons but it has now got to the stage where this has become deadly serious,as these clowns could be in power one day. Dear Truth Seeker, and correspondents,
I am writing this in a state of confusion. I have travelled a little over the last twenty years, mainly Asia, and each return has been with an increasing sense of reluctance. The perpetual short-term thinking, the perpetual cheap-skate approach to investment, which has placed so much of Australian public works in a category rather less than 2nd rate, and with impending and necessary expensive improvements.
Now I see this short-term thinking applied to foreign relations. This is a tactic that is fraught with problems and problems that can have long term consequences. I detect more than a touch of racism in these tactics, with the Australian parties thinking that the local games they employ here can be played with, and involve, the neighbours, with no effect on the long term relationships between Australia and these immediate countries.
It illustrates a naivety that may be considered charming in some circles, but in reality it is crass, and stupid. In my experience it is only confirms the impression of Australia that the neighbours have had for some years, that Australians are racist, naïve, and not very bright. These neighbours are not going away, and to create these problems for the “next generation” to clean up, all in the attempt to gain office, is another example of the tawdry and cheap politics currently employed here. I have no doubt that the LNP’s comments would not have been made if a European or North American country was the other party.
The National Emergency actually lies in the level of discourse currently used in Australia.

Yes there is an awful lot of short term thinking in this current crop of politicians, and with the LNP in particular verballing our neighbours almost weekly, it doesn’t augur well for diplomatic relations if they do get elected. 😯
It also doesn’t improve the impression that those neighbours have of us and our political processes, as they see the games being played out and a highly compliant MSM faithfully reporting every lie, spin and misleading statement that is made, as if it is the Gospel truth. 🙄

The current crop of politicians {other than Gillard] and for a bloody long time, have governed on a three year cycle.
Under this lot, how we would ever have got the Snowy mountains scheme, a rail network major highways is beyond me.
Gillard at least looked at longer term Issues, NBN, Gonski, NDIS,,all long term project with great benefits for the nation.
To achieve these, usually you need bi partisan support.
That unfortunately is a foreign concept for Tony Abbott.
From the minute Oakeshott and Windsor delivered the minority government to Gillard
Abbott has been Mr.Negative, Mr No.
As for our relations with our neighbours to the north, Kevin Rudd has been developing some,eg PNG with PM Oneill, Talks with Indonesia etc.
The LNP talk about them and to them as if they are backward natives, in need of advice.

Cornie, please take care of yourself & stop reading that trash from Murdoch’s “media”. Any reference to the story about alleged “boot camps” (another emotive phrase from LTDNews) seems to have disappeared from both from Google News Australia & the ABC. Went looking as I saw yesterday that several youth organisations, such as Boystown, were mentioned as already using similar programs for volunteers unemployed or troubled youths. Couldn’t find any mention of them or a potential government scheme.
The term “boot camp” is a deliberately derogatory & inflammatory term conjured up by the egregious subeditors of The Australian. So relax, take some deep breaths & lower your BP. All the very best for your op.

Truthie, morrison has repeated the same mistake with Nauru that him and howard made the first time. They think they can resettle genuine refugees from Nauru to other countries which just won’t happen. That is the whole point of the Gov’s PNG idea. Refugees will be held in PNG until proved genuine then under the agreement be released into PNG. Refugees can’t be resettled in Nauru, its swamped already, no one else will take them and eventually they will end up in Australia as happened the last time. Just an aside retired general moylan was the brilliant strategist who suggested that Australia should send tanks to Afghanistan the country littered with the burnt out shells of hundreds of soviet tanks. He is an absolute genius.

But given many PNG residents live within gated compounds, I am guessing the refugees would be happy to live in a gated community and keep the gate locked from the inside, to keep the ‘Rascals” out. Apparently a very big prob over there. No need to charge them with anything.

One of the commenters at TPS who lives there (PNG) says that there is a lot of misinformation about the people and conditions, while freely admitting that there are some problems.
so although, like you, I have heard some disturbing stories, my main hope is that the drownings will stop, and I truly believe that genuine refugees will be happy to be resettled in PNG, as even with those reported problems it will still be miles ahead of where they have come from, albeit in “Gated communities” 😀
I also still believe that the numbers, if the LNP and the greens STFU, and stop encouraging the people smugglers to keep sending boats, will be counted in the hundreds, not thousands 😀 over and above the initial influx. 😯
