Did we dodge a bullet, only to now jump on a land-mine?

Abbott shooting

With around two weeks to go, to the 2013 election, and still little to no detail on the LNP’s agenda for cuts, the questions asked of Tony Abbott are legitimate questions that need to be answered.

The truth is that the GFC and its ramifications are still ongoing, and there are many fragile economies around the world that would love to be in the position that Australia currently enjoys.

Sadly though, you wouldn’t know it by listening to the Australian MSM or the LNP.

So where can you go to find out the facts about our economy and why we jumped from #13 to #1 developed economies during the GFC?

Well a good place to start is IA, and the excellent articles by Alan Austin who has written a series of articles with the prefix “We really must talk about…”, the latest of which is “We really must talk about what actually did save Australia.”

The fact is that the overwhelming evidence from experts at home and around the world points to the stimulus packages introduced by the Rudd Labor government as the main factor in Australia’s avoidance of the recession that hit most other developed nations.

Now I know that the LNP claim that it was the Howard’s surpluses that are responsible along with the mining investments that saved us, but the facts don’t match up with their

I would like to give credit to Patriciawa's grandsons Daniel and Jacob, who did an amazing job of photoshoping this picture for her fine poem "Tony Abbott defends his magic pudding budget plan" http://polliepomes.wordpress.com/2012/04/18/tony-abbott-defends-his-magic-pudding-budget-plan/

wildly inaccurate claims   😯

And so we come to Abbott and his “plan for the future”.

This is Abbott’s plan for the future that starts by taking us forward to the past.

This is a plan that is supposed to be the best plan for our future, but we are to be spared the details of how it will work, and how it will be paid for.

This is a plan put forward by the alternate leader of our Nation, that when the questions get too tough for him he will respond with:

Or this little gem during the last debate;

Is this a leader (?) who we could expect to represent us well on the world stage?

Is this a man (?) who we can take on trust, to do the right thing by this Nation, whilst he:

  • Openly lies about the state of the economy?
  • Openly lies about the implementation of the carbon price and the effects of carbon pricing, and in fact made an argument himself for a carbon tax?
  • Says he wants to stop the boats and the drownings at sea, and then actively works to make sure that the boats keep coming?
  • Claims to be a conservationist, citing bushwalking as proof of his credentials?
  • Says he’ll stop the waste, whilst claiming expenses for volunteer work and charity rides?
  • States climate change is “Crap”, and then tells us that he now believes in the science, whilst producing a policy that all the credible experts say won’t work?
  • Goes out of his way to destroy both careers and lives for the sake of fulfilling his own political ambitions?
  • Demanding that opponents adhere to a set fo standards that he won’t enforce on his own party or candidates?
  • Refuses to adhere to their own charter of budget honesty?
  • Refuses to provide details of the cuts/savings measures required to pays for their promises?

And the list goes on   😯

So the burning question is;

Since the start of the  GFC, and the fantastic performance of our economy, jobs growth, productivity growth, employment, inflation, interest rate, and debt to GDP numbers; all lauded around the world, do we now turn our backs on all of that good work for someone like Abbott and his own rabid political ambitions, backed by the likes of Murdoch for his own personal and economic advantage?

Or to put it in simple terms;

Did we dodge a bullet, only to now jump on a land-mine?

  1. These people are desperate to get in now so they can lay claim to the good economy in my mind, but just because they are Liberals they will still take the opportunity to rip the buggery out of the public sector, health and especially education. Liberals live in mortal fear of the low and middle classes getting educated because they know that once that happens their goose is well and truly cooked.

      David, my main worry is not so much that they will lay claim credit for the good economy, but rather that they will lay waste to the good economy with their bad economic policies, and austerity measures. 😯

      As you say ripping the buggery out of the public sector. 🙄 as well as sell offs and privatisation’s etc. 😦

      The damage that they can do in one term could take decades to fix, and the last thing we need now is to go into the recession that we managed to stay out of because of good fiscal management. 👿

      Cheers 😀

      I heard this a while ago, and have not heard anything from the Abbott camp other than their usual denials which, based on past performances, are meaningless.
      Here is a link to a statement from David Bradbury, talking about Abbott’s intention to scrap it, so make of it what you will 😀

      http://treasurer.gov.au/DisplayDocs.aspx?doc=pressreleases/2013/064.htm&pageID=003&min=djba&Year=&DocType=0

      I suppose it comes down to who you believe, but after seeing the way that the LNP play fast and loose with the truth, and the fact that they have billions of savings to find, I don’t doubt that, like Newman in QLD, they will justify every lie and backflip, and do exactly what they have always intended to do, which is slash and burn.

      And Like Howard who said “Never ever”, knowing full well that he would introduce the GST in his second term, which is almost a certainty in Australian politics, Abbott will be working on the same assumption. and the promised “Tax review” will include the threshold as well as the GST.

      Cheers 😀

    In answer to your question Truthy, I fear the answer is YES. It is beyond my comprehension that anyone would consider voting for this compulsive liar. He is shifty and I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could chuck him.I do not believe one word he says, I’m even dubious that his missus likes him given she sends the ‘kids’ along to hold his hand.

    And like you my concern is for our precious future generations who will look back on this time and wonder why so many people were prepared to destroy our environment and our social cohesion for 30 pieces of silver.
    Poor fella my country indeed.

      you wouldn’t give 20 cents for the lot of them. 😦 Let’s just hope that the Australian people are smarter than the LNP and Murdoch think they are?

        More than enough compensation, TS! I really meant to focus on the argument you make so tellingly about Abbott’s failure to provide any details at all of what his extravagant buy back plans will cost. My protest was a bit over the top, but only because of wanting to draw attention to the work of my young collaborators!

        I’ve been very impressed with your versifying lately and came here expecting to find a poem on this Buy Back the Boats theme. Since you haven’t done one yet, can I pre-empt that theme and get going on a pome at last after many weeks’ inertia?

    Hockey has a few questions to answer too…

    “On 21 August 2007, a year before the global financial crisis erupted in September 2008, Hockey replied to a letter from a CEC member who is a constituent in his electorate of North Sydney, “I however disagree vehemently with your analysis that the world is facing a collapse of the financial markets. The last few days have indicated that the financial markets, with the support of central banking institutions, are able to meet the demands that have been placed on them.”

    However, a 19 May 2013 puff-piece in Sydney’s The Sunday Telegraph, promoting Hockey and his wife Melissa Babbage as a “power couple”, reveals that when Hockey wrote this 2007 letter, he must have known it wasn’t true.

    The Sunday Telegraph piece reports that “a year before the global financial crisis hit”, i.e. the very time Hockey was writing that there would not be a financial collapse, Hockey called Channel 7 television host David Koch with the urgent news that his wife Melissa—the then-head of global finance for the world’s biggest derivatives trader Deutsche Bank—was selling off the family’s investments in preparation for a financial crash.”

    Hi truthy,
    It is not looking good for Labor. Unfortunately the turmoil in Labor has made people think they are unstable and so Abbott gets a free ride.
    Abbott is claiming $550 saving from scraping the carbon price. If you can have a listen to the last minute of his press appearence earlier today and just before he walks off he makes a mistake and says that he will ‘end the carbon tax and it will cost families $550!
    Good ‘eh?
    Anyway his PPL scheme will cost every houshold $610 per year ($5 billion / 8.2 million households) of either service cuts or tax increases.
    Also I thought Christine Milnes speach today was quite good. It is a shame they can’t be more flexible. Got to ask Marylin if she works for SHY.
