The Willow Wood Man
This poem was written to be a song, and part of the soundtrack for my book.
It tells the story of a character who is a bard, of legend, called “The Willow Wood Man”.
The Willow Wood Man
In days of old when legends walked
And magic’s voice was on the land
There lived a bard of great renown
who’s song could cool the desert sand
From east to west from north to south
From simple folk to Queen and King
Magic’s voice rang from his mouth
Enchanting all who heard him sing
Then one fine day he spied fair maid
of slender form and beauty rare
With summers promise in her eyes
And wild flowers in her hair
But unknown to him she was betrothed
A wizards wife yet soon to be
Though when she heard the Bards sweet song
Her heart was lost to the magic’s plea
Of the Willow Wood Man
So the day before she was to wed
She pledged her love for the handsome Bard
Then in the dead of night they fled
On horses fleet and ridden hard
With the land still young and the forests new
And the Wizards anger burning free
They travelled south to hide from view
Beneath the Dark Woods canopy
But from afar the Wizard saw
And driven by his furies fire
He summoned monsters from the deep
To bring them out to face his ire
But luck was on the lovers side
As they came upon the Mystic lake
For evil cannot enter in
Through the wards that the magic there did make
For the Willow Wood Man
So for a season joy was theirs
While through the forest monsters prowled
But winters chill produced a fever
And the maiden passed as the north wind howled
He buried her deep beside the lake
And mourned her loss the winter through
And in the spring to his surprise
Out from her grave a Willow grew
Now in the heart of the Dark Wood stands
Around the banks of the Mystic lake
An ancient woods of Willows grand
Where the seasons tides can never break
For winter was banished by summers song
Sung as only one man can
With magic’s voice he tends the trees
With the sad sweet song of the Willow Wood Man
Bitter-sweet and beautiful love song. Would love to hear the music!

foreverjanice, if you click on the link at the top of the page you can, although it’s just a demo, as i have to wait until my voice works properly, due to the steroids that I was prescribed prior to being diagnosed with a rare genetic form of emphysema.
The book is a fantasy story, so the music is my own take on a folk/medieval style.
Thanks for your comment and like BTW 😀
Cheers 🙂 😀

Truth Seeker,
What can I say, except fan-bloody-tastic 🙂 Love the haunting melody that matches perfectly the story of the song. Great stuff.

Patricia, thanks for that, fantasy is a strange beast to write, so it’s good to get some independent feedback. 😀
Janice, I am so glad you liked the music as well as the lyrics, as it is hard to be objective about songs that you write, as music is a very personal thing. 😎
I have read many fantasy stories over the years, and when the author writes lyrics, they tend to say that they are sung to the tune of such and such a song, so that the reader can put a tune to them.
The problem for me has always been that it detracts from the fantasy nature of the story, so i decided that when I wrote my book it would have it’s own soundtrack.
Cheers 😀

were you able to download the mp3, or just the link, as I didn’t think that the file itself was available?

cornlegend, yes, I just did the same thing, so I am glad you let me know 😀
I just didn’t realise that it could be done, as it is only a demo, and not the finished track, which will not be done until I have written and recorded the rest of the tracks.
My book is a fantasy novel, and “The Willow Wood Man” is part of the soundtrack that I’m writing. and my own spin on the medieval style of folk songs, using acoustic instruments.
I am happy for you to have a copy of it, but as it is only a demo, and not yet for publication, I would appreciate it if you would not give out copies to anyone, and I will have to see if it’s possible to block the download from now on.
I am very grateful that you let me know 😀 Enjoy 😀
Cheers 🙂 😀

cornlegend, no need to apologise, the fault was mine. And as I said I am just grateful that you made me aware of it 😀
You are welcome to keep it if you like it, and I am sure that you won’t share it so that’s fine 😎
I might just put up the first verse or something, I’ll have a think about it.
Thanks again. 😀
